Under the Stone
Part I – The Perfect World Carter Thompson was sixteen years old and had never seen the sky. For him, the world had always been made of rock, steel, and artificial light. He was born in the Amber Shelter Network, an immense complex of caverns excavated by humans decades before the Great Collapse. More than two thousand people lived down there, distributed in neighborhoods connected by wide tunnels, industrial elevators, and walkways suspended over huge chambers lit by LED panels that mimicked the sunrise and sunset. Life was surprisingly good. There were schools, workshops, laboratories, hydroponic greenhouses, and mushroom farms. Water came from deep aquifers and was purified over and over again. Geothermal generators provided constant electricity. Every family had a small but comfortable apartment, and no one went hungry. From a young age, everyone learned the same lesson. Above was death. Teachers showed old photographs of destroyed cities, forests turned to ashes, and polluted oceans. They explained that the air was still toxic, that radiation persisted, and unpredictable creatures roamed the surface. The last expeditions had disappeared many years ago. —Humanity surviv
